Public Education
A main focus of the San Benito Fire Safe Council has been to provide educational materials and information to homeowners, businesses and public agencies to increase awareness of fire safety in San Benito County.
In 2001 The San Benito Fire Safe Council started a residential chipper program. The homeowner cuts and removes brush and the S.B.F.S.C. provides a crew and chipper to chip the brush. This project has widespread support throughout the community and is essential in reducing hazardous vegetation in neighborhoods in the county.
Also, the S.B.F.S.C. in conjunction with two local landscape designers has developed a fire-safe demonstration garden for the new Hollister Fire Station at Union Road and Airline Highway. The public will have access to these gardens as well as a comprehensive list of “fire safe” plants.
The S.B.F.S.C. has also formed a committee of members in the San Juan Canyon area of San Juan Bautista, due to the high risk of fire in that area.
